Why does my keyfile not work?

There are a number of reasons this can happen. These include:

  • You are using Linux, it may be necessary to change the permissions of the keyfile with a chmod command.
  • Please make sure a copy of the keyfile must be saved in the same folder that holds the UK Biobank utility programs.
  • If the keyfile has been saved as .ukbkey, the utility programs should find it automatically. If you expect to use more than one basket, then each keyfile should be named kNNNNNrMMMMMM.key, where NNNNNN is the ApplicationID and MMMMMM is the RunID. In this case, it will be necessary to specify the keyfile name by using the -a option when running the utility programs.
  • The keyfile is needed to unpack the main tabular data. It must be the correct keyfile for the RunID.
  • The keyfile is also needed to download bulk files. See Section 3.1.2 of the Data Access Guide. An old key for a previous basket will continue to be valid for up to one year, so long as the fields were also in the previous basket.
