Index of Multiple Deprivation

Hello,

Are lower scores on the IMD considered least deprived? Higher scores would be more deprived?

Best,

Terril

    Hello Terril,

Thank you for posting your query on the UK Biobank Community Forum.

Category 76 on the UK Biobank Data Showcase contains data-fields with various Indices of Multiple Deprivation scores. These Indices of Multiple Deprivation come from a UK government qualitative study of deprived areas in British local councils. The study is conducted separately in England (IMD), Scotland (SIMD) and Wales (WIMD). Scores were gathered from open data published by the UK government.

According to this document on the The English Indices of Deprivation 2019 from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, “the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) ranks every small area in England from 1 (most deprived area) to 32,844 (least deprived area).” By this definition, a lower score on the IMD would indicate a more deprived area.

Additionally, please refer to the Notes tab in Category 76 for the available scores and links to the original data and to Resource 6810 which describes the sources used to obtain the IMD scores presented by UK Biobank for participants recruited during 2006-10.

    Kind regards,

    Aditi
