Inquiry About Financial Support and Credit Programmes for UK Biobank Data

Li Xin

Dear UK Biobank Team,

I am a master's student currently researching brain imaging. According to the financial support and credit scheme information on your website, eligible student researchers are offered a reduced access fee of £500 (+ VAT where applicable) for data-only requests.

I have some questions regarding this funding scheme:

1.Could you please clarify the difference between a data-only request and Tier 3 access? Would a data-only request sufficiently meet my current research data needs?

2.How long does the access granted by the £500 fee last?

3.After submitting the application, how long does the processing and approval typically take?

Thank you very much for your time and assistance. I look forward to your reply.

Best regards, Xin Li

    Dear Researcher,

Please see below our responses to your queries:

    1. Data-only request vs Tier 3 access:
The term "data-only" simply refers to applications that do not involve biological samples (such as blood or urine). Most UK Biobank applications fall into this category. You should select the tier that includes the data you need for your research. For example, if you require access to raw imaging files, you’ll need to apply for Tier 3, regardless of whether your application is data-only.
    2. Duration of access:
The student access fee of £500 (+ VAT where applicable) provides access to the approved data for a period of 3 years from the date your application is approved.
    3. Application processing time:
It typically takes around 15 weeks from the time of submission to data release. This timeline may vary depending on the completeness of the application and the volume of applications being processed.

    Dear UK Biobank Team,
Thank you very much for your previous response.
I have another question. Since I will graduate in less than 3 years, for this student access option, would it be possible to transfer my access to another student after my graduation so that he/she could finish up the project?
    Thank you for your help.
