Does UK Biobank have more specific ICD-10 codes for tinnitus than H93.1?
Hi,
Does UK Biobank have more specific ICD-10 codes for tinnitus than H93.1? I would need to know the affected ear, specific type of tinnitus (e.g., subjective, objective, somatic , pulsatile) and if it is associated with hearing loss.
Best regards,
Maria

Hi Maria
Thanks for your post on the UKB Community Forum.
Data field 41270 provides data on the ICD 10 diagnosis our participants have recorded on their health records:
https://biobank.ctsu.ox.ac.uk/crystal/field.cgi?id=41270
The only ICD 10 code for tinnitus that we currently have data for is H93.1.
We have collected data from our participants regarding their hearing during the assessment centre visits and also during the health and wellbeing online follow-up questionnaire which may be of interest to you:

Kind regards,
Matt
Hi Matt,
Thank you so much for your reply!
Does healthcare records data include any more specific information about tinnitus? For example, the affected ear, specific type of tinnitus, and who made the diagnosis, where and how?
Best regards,
Maria
Dear Maria,
Records relating to tinnitus may be found in the record-level GP data and the record- level hospital inpatient data. This data is accessed via the gp_clinical and hesin_diag entities on the UK Biobank RAP. Unfortunately, for the hospital inpatient data, we only have ICD10 codes to 4 characters (3 digits) eg H93.1 Tinnitus, so I don’t think this is granular enough for your requirement for additional detail. We also do not have access to any clinical notes or diagnostic tests. I think the GP data will be similarly limited in its depth, although you may like to review the codes found in Resource 592 (worksheets read_v2_lkp, read_ctv3_lkp, icd9_lkp, icd10_lkp) to check that there aren’t any codes that might give further detail.
There is also some limited data on tinnitus self-reported by participants. This can be found in field 4803, which is data recorded at assessment centre visits, and also fields 28624, 28625 and 28626 which is data collected via the online health and wellbeing questionnaire.
I hope this information is helpful and thank you for using the forum.
Kelly
