This article guides you through how to register as a new UK Biobank researcher, including the requirements and documents you need, and how to verify your email address.

You do not need to register until you are ready to submit an application to use UK Biobank data in your research or to be added as a collaborator to a research project.

Registration requirements

  • Each researcher must register on our Access Management System (AMS) and have an approved registration before submitting an application for data access or being added as a collaborator to an existing project.
  • If your institute isn't already approved, it must be registered and approved before gaining access to UK Biobank data.
  • Costs are per application, and each application grants 3 years of data access once approved, payment received, and Material Transfer Agreement executed.

What documents you need

Researchers can register with UK Biobank for free via our website. Each registration must include the following mandatory fields -

  1. Researcher's full name and date of birth
  2. An up-to-date resume/CV in English that verifies your current position and institute, OR a link to a personal profile page on your institute's website.
  3. PubMed reference numbers of up to 5 peer-reviewed publications on which you are named (if available)
  4. An email account that is specific to you and your institute
  5. Details of any complaints raised against you in the last 3 years (if applicable)
  6. Certificate of quiz completion for MRC: Research, GDPR, and confidentiality within the last 12 months.

This short video explains how to register with UK Biobank using our Access Management System (AMS).
