To analyse and store data on the UKB-RAP you will need to set up a billing account and project associated wallets to cover the costs of use. The costs associated with the data being held within the UKB-RAP are covered by UK Biobank, but there are costs associated with compute use on the platform, storage of data outputs from your analysis (and any data you upload to the platform) and for download of researcher generated outputs.
This guide is for Principal Investigators to walk you through the necessary steps to manage costs and ensure smooth operation of your research projects.
What is a wallet/billing account?
The first time you access the Research Analysis Platform; the system will create for you a "wallet" (i.e. a "personal billing account"). Your wallet is initially loaded with £40 credit to allow you start working within the UKB-RAP straight away. Credits are used to cover the compute and storage charges incurred on the UKB-RAP. Within your wallet, you can add additional funds, set spending limits, and view previous transactions.
How do I set up billing?
The billing process and platform is owned by DNAnexus, who manage the UKB-RAP on behalf of UK Biobank. To be able to set up a billing account you must be an approved UK Biobank researcher and have a UKB-RAP account login (instructions on how to do this can be found here). Setting up a wallet (personal billing account) is necessary to access your initial £40 UKB-RAP credits and to pay for further costs associated with your use of the platform.
- Setup of your billing account starts at your UKB-RAP profile, where you choose the project you need to create a wallet for
- The process then takes you to the DNAnexus billing portal where you will provide information required to enable payments to be made.
What will I see related to billing on my UKB-RAP account?
On your UKB-RAP account you will see the wallets (personal billing accounts) associated with each project; including a summary of credit available and spend so far. Wallets can be associated with multiple projects and can be viewed by multiple people. It is up to you to decide how to set up the wallets to ensure the best system for you and your researchers.
You will have separate user logins and passwords for your UKB-RAP account and your DNAnexus billing portal account.
What will I see on the DNAnexus billing portal?
The portal will allow you to see all the payment details associated with your account, including billing address, credit card details and other payment information. The portal also lists the items that you can be charged for on the UKB-RAP, along with associated costs (e.g. compute instance).
What payment methods can I use?
The DNAnexus system support credit cards and purchase orders (POs). Credit card payments can be self-serviced (i.e. set up by the user), whilst POs must be set up by DNAnexus. POs are only available for amounts of £10,000 or greater and are only payable in GBP and there is an associated charge for establishing this process.
Can I limit the spending on my account?
Yes. All wallets are automatically set-up with a £250 limit, but this can be increased if required. To gauge how much you might need to spend, a rate card is available which lists costs of compute, and storage on the UKB-RAP.
Is there a guide to creating my wallet and personal billing account?
DNAnexus has produced a helpful video and step-by-step guide to explain the process of creating your account. Further information from DNAnexus can be found here.
Who do I contact if I have a query about billing, or setting up my wallet(s)?
You need to contact the DNAnexus billing team directly at billing@dnanexus.com
