What about something as simple as retrieving the file names (i.e., as would be done with ls or find). Do these also need to be sent through a dx run request? What about visualizing the output (i.e., cat, less..)?

You can use dx-toolkit, which is a set of command-line utilities to work with data on DNAnexus platform (UKB RAP). There are commands such as dx ls, dx cat, dx pwd etc. You do not need to run dx run, just use the appropriate dx command (e.g. dx ls).
