How does UK Biobank review and verify researcher applications?

  • Updated

We review all applications to ensure that researchers meet our eligibility requirements and that their proposed research is health-related and in the public interest.

All applications follow the same review process, whether you work for a university, charity or commercial organisation.

1. Researcher background checks

Our trained staff carry out background checks to verify that applicants meet our requirements. These include:

  • Professional background: Reviewing your research experience and track record in health-related research.
  • Institutional affiliation: Confirming that you work for a legitimate research organisation with a track record in health-related research.
  • Security checks: Checking applicants against international sanctions lists.
2. Research proposal assessment

Our in-house scientists review your research proposal to confirm that it qualifies as health-related research in the public interest.

This means assessing whether your proposed research:

  • Has the potential to benefit the health and wellbeing of society.
  • Avoids causing harm, including reinforcing harmful stereotypes about particular groups.
3. Additional review (if required)

If your proposal raises concerns or requires further consideration, we refer it to UK Biobank's Access Committee for a more detailed review.

The committee may also seek independent ethics advice where necessary.
